TodayI am giving my verdict on the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink liquid lipsticks, along with swatches of the Un Nudes, the new collection they just released! We have all been there before, at that time you thought you were looking so fab with your liquid matte lipstick, all to find out that your lips look so cracked, with the color either We’ve been covering matte liquid lipsticks on this blog nearly since its beginning. We often found ones we liked, ones we found better than the rest at that time, but now, right at the end of the era of the liquid mattes, I can say I found my favourite liquid lipstick of all time. Ladies and gents, the best liquid lipstick Maybelline Superstay Ink Matte. Applying Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink in Ruler. I still like peripera’s, Huda’s, and Lancome’s Matte Shakers, but the one I like the most? I didn’t have to go to Korea or to Sephora for it. Let’s hear it for drugstore brands, because it’s Maybelline’s Superstay Matte Ink. When I wrote about the formula for the first time, I called it weird and super-sticky’. Which isn’t untrue, I guess, but there’s another side to that. Claims All the good stuff long-wearing up to 16hrs!, intensive, matte colour, trendy shades, transfer-proof, non-crumbling. Formula A good one Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink in Ruler. I haven’t met a liquid matte lipstick which formula wasn’t somehow finicky, and this is no exception. You’ve to faff around with it for a minute or so, the secret being to let the formula dry on your lips without closing your mouth completely so that your lips rub together. So no talking or drinking for a minute! Even then the formula will be slightly sticky. It’s not completely kiss- or transferproof, but holds up decently well. I also wish they wouldn’t have used this sickly-sweet vanilla scent, but it’s bearable, and doesn’t leave a weird taste in my mouth. Literally. The formula includes a healthy dollop of silicones and film-formers, and, true to that, the colour won’t be totally lightweight on your lips. It’s more like a liquid Band-Aid. Application The wand comes with a flocked applicator in leaf’-shape with a little reservoir in the middle that’s ok to use. I find I’m able to get a straight outline with it, although I imagine people with smaller lips might find it a bit unwieldy and cumbersome. It’s very inflexible, that’s for sure. Be sure to start with a thin layer and go from there. Wear-time Removal attempts Removal attempts left pic after cleansing with peripera’s lip stain remover and water. Right after going in with Clinique’s Take the day off cleansing balm and water. Amazing. Truly and utterly amazing. No matter what, this stays on. You can eat a burger, and. It. Will. Not. Budge. It’ll fade a bit around the inner rim of your lips, but that’s it. That’s also the reason that I found the first shade I got, a super dark purple, too much work – it definitely needs a liner, and that fading looks just stupid. Lighter colours are the way to go! You definitely need a heavy-duty cleansing balm to get wholly rid of it at the end of the day. If you want to re-apply, you can do it without getting it all removed first, and the formula doesn’t start to do strange things like balling up and cracking. You can go swimming with this one, and it’ll stay on. I’m continuously amazed by it. I prep my lips with a good lip balm first, apply it and am happy for the first half of my day. I usually gravitate towards more moisturising lipsticks and glosses on a daily basis, so all matte liquids feel a bit uncomfortable to me. But the Superstay Mattes aren’t that bad, mostly I know this sounds weird, because the formula tricks my brain into thinking that I applied something to my lips. Weird, but works for me. If you’re the type who loves all those liquid mattes that feel like water and don’t leave a trace on your lips, this is not for you. Nice and a bit out there. In a good way. You’ll find oodles of trendy nudes, classic reds and pinks, and also weird’ colours like greys. There’re some good vampy shades in their line-up, as well. I can see it as pretty inclusive as well – their nudes cover a lot of different shades for a lot of skintones, and their IG often shows the shades on a variety of people. Good! Ruler is a chameleon colour – one me it has definitely some muted, brickish tones. I’d describe it as a muted rosewood shade. All in all recommended. Heavily. Especially for around 10 bucks. Everytime you blink, another brand has launched another new line of liquid lipsticks. But I'm not complaining! It took me a while to "get" the hype, but if you manage to find a liquid lipstick in a shade that is perfect for you and feels lightweight and non drying, there really is no lip product that can beat it. No need to check if you've smudged your lip colour after having a sip of water or even a bit of food, no need to constantly reapply, and no need for lip liner or brushes to get a neat finish liquid lipsticks are very much my jam. Maybelline launched a new range of colours for its Superstay Matte Ink lip products, and today I'm reviewing two of those new shades 65 Seductress and 80 Ruler. Enjoy! The Superstay Matte Inks have a sweet, vanilla-type smell I enjoy a lot, and come with a doe foot applicator with a crevice in the middle to pick up enough product so you don't have to double-dip. As always with liquid lipstick, I'd suggest applying a thin layer on your first go - if you apply the product too generously, the liquid lipstick may feel heavy once dry or even crumble a bit. In other words wipe off a bit of product on the side of the tube before applying. First up 80 Ruler. I expected a medium toned pink based on the tube, but I was pleasantly surprised when upon applying the colour turned out to be more like a rosey brick red. A neutral shade, but still deep and sultry, super versatile and flattering on a multitude of skintones. This one can be worn to the office but will look just as nice for a night out, and I have to say I didn't actually have any dupes in my collection so I'm pretty stoked with this one! In use, the product applies perfectly even no patchiness in one swipe, and is in fact so opaque and saturated that you might have to clean up the edges a bit after applying. Ruler dries quickly but feels tacky for a few minutes after applying, so beware of that. My lips did not feel dry in any way while I wore this product, and the colour lasted through drinks and meals only fading a bit in the middle. Reapplying worked best if I only used the slightest amount of product to prevent that crumbly buildup effect, but otherwise this is a top notch liquid lipstick! Now for 65 Seductress. In general I'm not much of a fan of these pale nude lip colours, but there's this tiny window during summer while I'm at my most suntanned, and at that point I do enjoy pale, peachy lip colours that evoke that 60s Brigitte Bardot type look. Seductress is pretty perfect for that vibe, although it might be a bit too pink leaning for me. I prefer more playful, warmer, peachy based nudes, but Seductress is sure to be a crowdpleaser because of its neutral undertone. It reminds me a lot of Kylie's Candy K, but slightly ligher and more beige in tone. Seductress performs just like Ruler in wearability, lip feel, opaqueness etcetera. I enjoy a product line that is consistent between different shades, so that's a plus in my book. The liquid lipstick formula is housed in a plastic tube which isn't fully recyclable but can be recycled in Maybelline's in-store Recycling program with a different color panel for each shade in the range. This is handy - it's annoying having to dig through an overstuffed makeup bag of all-black tubes trying to find one elusive shade of red. In this case, the doe-foot applicator has a clever pointed tip, to help you give a really precise, clean coat of color. This will also help you nail how to stop lipstick bleeding and feathering – you won't need to use your best lip liner although of course, you can, if you prefer Use the tip of the lipstick to line your lips, then coat the rest of your lips in color. It's a smart design, that really works. As for the formula itself, it's highly pigmented. If I'm being fussy, it's a tiny bit sticky, but that's the case with most long-lasting lipsticks. It's a little bit tacky in texture, to begin with, but once it dries down it's absolutely fine and feels comfy on the lips. So far, so good. This was at 7am and the product promises 16 hours of wear – would this really take me to 11pm?By mid-afternoon, post lunch and after drinking four cups of tea, I cautiously checked the mirror and saw that the color looked pretty pristine. A huge relief – so I got braver. I picked up some snacks, made dinner plans, and upped the ante on my Maybelline Superstay Ink 7pm I noticed my red lipstick was still firmly in place then continued with my evening, meeting friends for dinner plans, followed by drinks. Checking in the dark bathroom mirror at 10, the lipstick was very much still there. Sure, maybe it wasn't as pristine as before, but you would still describe me as 'having lipstick on'. It was slightly smudged around the inner corners blame the wine, but I was pleased – and relieved that my most-recommended lipstick works as well as I thought it did. My professional reputation is, thankfully, still intact. Maybelline Superstay Ink review; The final verdictWhat an emotional rollercoaster. I started this Maybelline Superstay Ink review pretty sure I knew what the result would be, and my confidence really wavered after the first day when the color seemed to vanish after a few hours. The second test, applied with more care, really reminded me how brilliant this lip color is – it truly didn't start to budge until the 15th hour of wear, after three meals and a handful of drinks. The key with this lip color is all in the application. For it to really go the distance the formula needs to be applied to a clean canvas of totally dry lips, which had been moisturized hours before. This transformed the staying power to one that more than meets the product's claims. So if you're struggling with longevity with Maybelline Superstay Ink, or any long-lasting lipsticks, make sure you're applying them correctly. Maybe avoid ramen too.
